ALAC Receives funding through the Canada Performing Arts Workers Resilience Fund

Artists and Lawyers for the Advancement of Creativity (ALAC) is excited to announce being awarded funding through the Canada Performing Arts Workers Resilience Fund (CPAWRF), provided by Canadian Heritage and the Government of Canada.

CPAWRF is a temporary funding program for 2022-2023, intended to assist independent and self-employed workers in the live performance sector by investing in sector-led initiatives designed to improve the social, economic, and career circumstances of these workers.

ALAC has received funding to provide professional assistance to live performing arts workers facing increasingly complex legal challenges. The project will entail developing and facilitating targeted legal services and resources for independent and self-employed artists in the live performing arts sector in Ontario. This will include expanding our organization’s legal clinic to offer dedicated appointments for these workers, partnering with established arts organizations to host educational events, and building other resources for the live performing arts sector.

The legal clinic will assist artists and workers with legal issues and questions relating to their professional practices and will be operated by volunteer lawyers with a specialization in the arts and entertainment sector. The educational events and resources will be open to all artists across Canada and will be tailored specifically to address the needs of the live performing arts sector workers.  Additional responsive legal resources will be developed based on community input and immediate need.

The funded activities will be delivered through Artists’ Legal Advice Services (ALAS), an ongoing project of ALAC.  Community outreach and program development will begin immediately, with dedicated legal clinic appointments being made available shortly.  Targeted legal educational events and resources will be offered as soon as possible.
