Designed for photographers working in artistic, exhibition, and publication contexts, this session with intellectual property lawyer Riley Sun will offer a practical introduction to intellectual property (IP) law as it applies to photographic works and will contextualize IP laws within the rapidly changing digital landscape in which photos are increasingly created, circulated and sold.
Topics to be discussed will include, for example:
- Copyright fundamentals for photographic works
- Ownership vs. licensing and what photographers control
- Working with galleries, publishers, and collaborators
- Reproductions, online sharing, and social media considerations
- Tips for enforcement and responding to unauthorized use
- Privacy and model releases
- Emerging IP issues in the age of AI
The session is suitable for photographers at every stage of their career, and will also include a Q+A opportunity with the facilitator.
