Ask a Lawyer: Legal Questions in the Performing Arts
Artists’ Legal Advice Services (ALAS), National Network of Legal Clinics for the Arts, and Artists’ Legal Outreach (ALO), in partnership with The AFC, will host a Q&A Educational with lawyer Martha Rans, on Monday, March 6, 2023.
This educational session is geared toward workers in the live performing arts and will provide participants the opportunity to ask legal questions related to creative workplaces and careers, navigating topics like harassment, discrimination, and more. This event is being organized to continue strengthening community support and advocacy work, especially for artists that have been historically underserved and/or discriminated against.

This is part of a series of virtual events addressing topical legal issues faced by independent artists in the live performance sector. Events in the series include panel discussions around workplace discrimination in theatre, artist rights for performing musicians, accessibility in theatre, and pay equity for performing arts. Martha Rans has been a lawyer for 28 years. Her Vancouver-based law practice specializes in the legal needs of non-profits, charities and digital creatives. She spent 10 years as labour employment and human rights lawyer/mediator with the BC and Ontario governments. She has appeared before administrative tribunals, provincial and BC Supreme Court. She advises on charity law, incorporation, governance, privacy, employment, labour, health & safety and human rights. Her advice is practical and strategic, tailored to the needs of her clients. She is also a copyright educator and teaches the next generation of artists and designers at post-secondary schools across Canada. She is the Legal Director of the the Artists’ Legal Outreach, which provides advice, information and education to thousands of BC’s creators and non profits.
Artists’ Legal Advice Services
For 35 years, Artists’ Legal Advice Services (ALAS) has worked to empower Ontario’s creative community by providing access to summary legal advice, information, and education. ALAS is operated by volunteer entertainment and intellectual property lawyers, fellow creators, and law students who generously donate their time to help provide advice to those who may not be able to access more expensive alternatives. ALAS assists creators in three main ways: our educational sessions, our bi-weekly legal clinic, and our legal database.
We are comprised of a group of volunteer lawyers and law students committed to working with artists and arts organizations. We offer resources, workshops and clinics where artists across BC can meet confidentially with an experienced lawyer.
